Jesse's seedball recipe
5 parts red (terricotta clay), 3 parts organic compost, 1 part water
and 1 part seeds.
The clay can either be harvested from nature (plenty of red clay here
in the DC area) or purchased at an art store. Preferably in powdered form,
if you get it wet you have to dry it and grind it up which is a serious
pain in the ass.
The compost can be either homemade or you can get it for about 2 bucks
a bag from home despot or some other place.
The seeds can either be some monoculture for wild crafting or a combination
of many seeds for reclaiming dead areas. ideally have a mix that includes
types of seeds that will do well in a variety of conditions. It's also
possible to use wildflower or wildflower and grass mixtures that are blended
for your bioregion. Ideally, of course, the seeds would be saved seeds.
Mix the clay, seeds and organic compost together and add enough water
to form them into little balls about the size of a penny. Let them sun
dry into hard little balls.
To apply, toss a handfull where you would like to see life regain a foothold.
The clay protects from predators. The seeds actually sprout inside the
ball and take hold. DO NOT PLANT THE SEEDBALLS. The seeds are already
planted in the balls. They may not take hold this season, they mey sit
for quite some time before conditions are right. It's not a instant gratification
action.
